Wildlands Conservancy - Get Out! for Wellness: D&L Lehigh Tannery
Starting in 1835, Josiah White and the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company built dams, locks and canals along the 26-mile stretch of the Lehigh River between White Haven and Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe). In the 1860s the second largest tannery in the US operated in the town of Lehigh Tannery near the river. We’ll walk to one of the tallest locks and then continue south to view the remains of the Tannery. We’ll return by the same route back to the parking lot. Then we will continue north into White Haven, where we have the option to stop for lunch and warm up. The trail is level with a smooth surface. Dress in layers for the weather. Dogs on leash are welcome. Get Out! For Wellness is provided free of charge thanks to funding from Lehigh Valley Health Network. Please register online.
