Veterans Treatment Court Presents at the Palmerton Area Chamber of Commerce Monthly Luncheon
Dear Members and Friends,
JUDGE JOSEPH J. MATIKA TO ADDRESS PALMERTON CHAMBER
We remember this month the centennial of the armistice that ended the “war to end all wars.” The World War as it was known a century ago is often thought of as being a conflict limited to the fields of France, when in fact it was global in nature.
The Palmerton Chamber will meet at noon on Tuesday November 13 at Joey B’s at 638 Delaware Avenue where our guest speaker will be The Honorable Joseph J. Matika, Judge of the Carbon County Court of Common Pleas. It is appropriate that he will speak about the role of the Veterans Court – an important part of our judicial system.
Many veterans return from service with combat related illnesses that can cause them to become involved in minor offenses. Judge Matika will explain how these cases are addressed to facilitate the rehabilitation of the offenders and to speed their return as contributing members of the society they helped defend.
We should never forget the sacrifices our veterans made. A plaque that was mounted in the New York offices of The New Jersey Zinc Company and that is now displayed at the Palmerton Heritage Center lists the names of 23 Zinc Company employees who made the supreme sacrifice during the first World War to preserve our way of life. We should be eternally grateful to those and to others for what they did for us.
