Wildlands Conservancy - Flying Squirrels @ Thomas Darling Preserve
Did you know the Northern Flying Squirrel is an endangered species in Pennsylvania? At Wildlands Conservancy, we’ve installed nest boxes throughout the scenic Thomas Darling Preserve to support and monitor these elusive creatures. So far, several of the more common Southern Flying Squirrels have made these boxes their home, giving us an exciting glimpse into the forest’s dynamic wildlife. This is more than just a hike—it’s a scientific exploration of one of Pennsylvania’s most unique and ecologically significant landscapes. Join us as we venture through this vast 1,300-acre preserve, home to one of the state’s largest and most pristine spruce forests. We’ll take a guided hike through this unique habitat, check the nest boxes for signs of flying squirrels, and—if we’re lucky—get to meet a few of these fascinating creatures up close! Why You Won’t Want to Miss This: Exclusive access to our conservation and monitoring efforts. Off-trail adventure through a rare spruce forest ecosystem. The possibility of a close encounter with flying squirrels! Important Details: No restrooms onsite. There is a Wawa with facilities about a mile away. Off-trail exploration. We’ll be covering uneven terrain, so wear sturdy footwear and dress for the conditions. Meeting Location: Park in the lot across from 606 PA-940, Pocono Lake, PA 18347. Don’t miss this chance to connect with nature and discover the hidden world of flying squirrels! Please register online. For program questions, contact Nicole Landis at Nlandis@wildlandspa.org
