SUMMARY:LAHA presents The Story of the SS United States “America’s Flagship” with Larry Bulanda
DESCRIPTION:Lehighton Area Heritage Alliance is pleased to present Larry Bulanda to share the history of the SS United States: America's Flagship. Join us at the Lehighton Boys & Girls Band Hall (197 N 6th St) on Monday\, April 20\, 2026\, from 7:00-8:00 PM. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Admission for Members: Free\; Non-Members: $5 requested donation (or join at the door!) The SS United States is a record-breaking ocean liner with an amazing history. After a 71-year sailing career and an uncertain retirement program\, this 73 year old ship will be sunk off of the coast of Florida this April to become the world's largest artificial reef. Come and hear about the ship and its career during the glory days of trans-Atlantic sailing. Larry Bulanda is a retired electrical engineer who worked at Newport News Shipbuilding\, where the SS United States was built. His focus was reactor plants and aviation systems of the Navy's nuclear aircraft carrier fleet\, but he gained an appreciation for the famed ship from an engineering perspective and is dedicated to preserving its legacy.
